Moscow calls on Washington to adhere to international law when considering future steps regarding Syria

Moscow, SANA – The Russian Foreign Ministry called on the United States to adhere to international law when it comes to its future steps regarding the situation in Syria, specifically the rules that state that in the absence of authorization from a state to conduct military operations on its territories, then authorization can only come from the Security Council.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry said that Moscow considered over the US announcing its decision to carry out reconnaissance flights over Syrian territories.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich saying that Washington is justifying this decision with the “need to protect its citizens abroad from attacks by Islamist extremists” and set up strikes against ISIS sites in Iraq.

The statement said that the Syrian government voiced its concern over the growing influence of extremist elements and expressed readiness to cooperate with the international community in this regard.

It should be noted that Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Minister asserted Syria’s readiness to cooperate on regional and international levels in the field of counterterrorism as per Security Council resolution no. 2170, with al-Moallem saying in a press conference on Monday that this cooperation must be carried out through coordination with the Syrian government, asserting that resolution 2170 does not authorize anyone to act alone against any country and that any breach of Syrian sovereignty by any side constitutes an act of aggression.
