Damascus, Oct. 15 (SANA) Nurseries run by Damascus’ Parks Directorate supply the capital with around 300,000 seedlings and plants annually, in addition to approximately 600,000 seasonal annuals, supporting efforts to expand green spaces across the city.
Iman Diab, head of the nurseries division, told SANA on Wednesday that al-Adawi Nursery, the directorate’s central facility, covers about 88,000 square meters and produces forest and fruit trees, shrubs, ornamental plants and flowers suited to the local climate.
Seasonal production
The nursery’s annual-plant section has produced more than 300,000 summer plants since the beginning of 2026 for public squares, road medians and flower beds. It is also producing 285,000 winter annuals for planting during the winter season, Diab said.
Planting and local production
Since the beginning of the year, the directorate has planted around 200,000 trees, shrubs and ornamental plants in public parks, green spaces, squares, road medians and along sidewalks.
Its plans also include growing 50,000 roses each season, including Damask and local varieties. Local propagation helps maintain plant quality and ensure suitability for Damascus’ environment, Diab said.
The directorate oversees four other main nurseries in addition to al-Adawi. They produce fruit trees such as olive, bitter orange and pomegranate, as well as forest and ornamental varieties including bauhinia, chinaberry, jacaranda, cypress and carob.
Diab said expanding vegetation helps improve the urban environment and quality of life, reduce pollution, enhance the city’s appearance and support biodiversity.
Mezzeh tree-planting campaign
In November 2025, the directorate planted 10,000 fruit, ornamental and forest trees in Mezzeh. The campaign included 1,000 olive, pomegranate and fig trees at the April 17 junction, 5,000 evergreen thuja trees along the Mezzeh highway median and 4,000 assorted trees in nearby neighborhoods.
