Latakia, SANA- The Dama of Ballouran is located about 30 kilometers north of Latakia, serving as a vital water source for residents in the northern countryside and a natural tourist destination at the Syrian coast.

The Dam has a total storage capacity of 15.5 million cubic meters, supplying drinking water to many villages with a daily rate of up to 6,100 cubic meters, and irrigating approximately 1,370 hectares of agricultural land.

Low Water Stock

Drought and rainfall deficits over the past year, have depleted the water stock to less than 4 million cubic meters in the Dam that depends the Shammarliya Rivers as its major water supply along with springs and rainfall.

However, the Dam still represents a natural tourist destination and locals call on authorities to regulate investment on the banks of the Dam’s Lake with the aim of stimulating local tourism, creating job opportunities, and increasing the revenues of municipalities that depend on their own resources.

Although climate change has affected the waterfall in the coastal region in Syria resulting in depleting the Dam’s waters, it is still looked at by residents as a tourist destination that attracts visitors from various governorates, especially in the summer due to its stunning natural scenery.
