Economy Ministry explains reasons of banning importing second- hand cars

Damascus, SANA- Economy and Industry Ministry clarified that its decision to ban importing old cars was due to the large number of vehicles that entered the country during recent months lacking required quality.

Director of Government Communications at the Ministry, Qassim Kamel, told SANA that during the period following Syria’s liberation, the northern market was open to car imports, which led to the entry of large number of vehicles that do not meet the required quality standards and became a burden on the infrastructure and the local economy.

He added that Importers benefited from the absence of complicated customs restrictions compared to that of the former regime and citizens’ high demand to replace their old cars, most of which were manufactured before 2000.

The official said that the decision was aims at regulating car imports within technical standards to control Imports costs and keep foreign currency reserves.
