Thomas Barrack: Our priority in Syria is eliminating ISIS

Dubai, SANA – The US Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, confirmed that his country’s priority in Syria is to achieve prosperity and security, combat terrorism, and eliminate ISIS, stressing that Washington has no desire to interfere in the governance of Middle Eastern countries.

Barrack pointed out in a statement to Al Arabiya channel that the U.S. lifted economic sanctions on Syria to “give it an opportunity” for national recovery. The move allows Syrians to “rebuild themselves” through regional support, and pointed out that Saudi Arabia serves as a “key player” in this framework.

The Special Envoy clarified that President Trump’s sanctions relief—coordinated with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Erdogan—aimed to enable Syrian self-determination, avoid imposing new governance models, facilitate regional-led reconstruction, and explicitly not mandate constitutional changes.

Barrack stressed that it was the Syrian people who overthrew Bashar al-Assad’s regime, not the United States, and said:”The focus and historical awareness of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa enabled his transition from a fighter to a statesman, and we are committed to allowing him to prove himself.”
