Gulf-US Summit in Riyadh Welcomes Lifting of Sanctions on Syria

Riyadh-SANA-The Gulf-US Summit, held on Wednesday, in the Saudi capital of Riyadh welcomed US President Donald Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Syria.

“We are now looking at relations with the new Syrian administration, and I met with President Ahmad al-Sharaa, we discussed about normalizing relations with Syria”, in his opening remarks, Trump said, adding “we held a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.”

President Trump added: “I ordered the lifting of sanctions on Syria to give them a new opportunity, and this will be a great opportunity for them, and I spoke with the Saudi Crown Prince and also spoke with President Erdoğan by phone, and we felt that this would give the Syrians a chance.

The president went on saying that things have not been easy, I am pleased to do this, and we will lift all sanctions on Syria, and I think that will be positive.”

For his part, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic and the need to support the efforts made by the Syrian government to achieve security and stability.

The Saudi Crown Prince said, “We would like to commend the decision taken yesterday by US President Donald Trump to lift sanctions on the Syrian Arab Republic, which will alleviate the suffering of the brotherly Syrian people and open a new page toward growth and prosperity.”

For his part, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain said, “We thank US President Donald Trump for his decision to lift sanctions on Syria, and we look forward to further cooperation to achieve a safe, stable, and prosperous region that includes all its countries.”

For his part, the Emir of the State of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, stressed the need to strengthen the international community’s efforts to ensure Syria’s security and stability, preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity, end the suffering of its people, and halt foreign interference in its affairs, expressing his appreciation for President Trump’s announcement to lift sanctions on Syria.

The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, also thanked the US President for his decision, noting the efforts of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in this decision, which will positively impact stability in Syria.
