Damascus, Nov. 03 (SANA) The Protection and Safety Department at the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission is working to strengthen radiation safety and ensure the safe use of nuclear and radiation technologies through six specialized scientific divisions.
The Commission’s media office told SANA on Monday that the department comprises the Human Radiation Protection Division, Radiation Calibration Division, Radiation Measurements Division, Environmental Protection and Radioactive Decontamination Division, Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection Division, and Technical and Radiation Services Division.
Together, the divisions provide a scientific and technical framework for meeting radiation protection and safety requirements across medical, industrial and research applications.
Monitoring human exposure and radiation doses
The Human Radiation Protection Division monitors internal radiation doses among workers at facilities and assesses their exposure levels. It also evaluates doses received by patients during medical imaging procedures, helping promote the responsible use of radiation in health care and strengthen protection measures for both workers and patients.
The Radiation Calibration Division performs specialized scientific and technical work to ensure the accuracy of radiation measuring instruments and the reliability of their results.
Its work supports the quality of measurements used in medical, industrial and research applications and provides a technical reference for ensuring accurate results. It also supports quality assurance in radiotherapy, where precise dose determination and measurement are essential.
Monitoring facilities and environmental conditions
The Radiation Measurements Division measures radioactivity levels and neutron flux in nuclear and radiation facilities and equipment. These measurements provide scientific data for assessing operating conditions and verifying compliance with safety requirements.
They also help monitor radiation conditions at facilities and determine exposure levels associated with the use of different radiation sources and equipment.
The Environmental Protection and Radioactive Decontamination Division develops methods for monitoring environmental contaminants and improving the effectiveness of radiation monitoring and measurement.
Its responsibilities include developing techniques for monitoring airborne particulates, improving their efficiency and providing reference materials needed for radiological analysis and measurement.
Protecting archaeological and heritage collections
The Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection Division assesses exposure to optical and ultraviolet radiation, studies their potential effects and provides scientific and technical recommendations to reduce associated risks.
Its work includes protecting archaeological and heritage collections from damage caused by exposure to light and ultraviolet radiation. The division also provides specialized equipment and platforms for irradiation procedures serving research and other technical purposes.
Specialized technical and radiation services
The Technical and Radiation Services Division provides specialized radiation protection services and develops solutions and materials designed to reduce radon permeability.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can accumulate in enclosed spaces, making measures to limit exposure an important part of radiation protection.
The division’s work contributes to developing protective measures and reducing radiation exposure through scientific research and technical applications aimed at improving safety.
Supporting the peaceful use of nuclear technology
The six divisions work together within the Protection and Safety Department, providing specialized scientific and technical support to the medical, industrial and research sectors.
Their work supplies the scientific data and technical services needed to improve the quality of nuclear and radiation applications and ensure that they meet safety and security requirements.
These efforts form part of the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission’s role in developing the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and nuclear and radiation technologies, strengthening national scientific and technical capabilities, and promoting a culture of protection and safety.
The Commission’s work seeks to balance the benefits of scientific and technological applications with the protection of people and the environment, in line with recognized international standards and practices.
