Damascus-New York, Sept. 5 (SANA) The UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a Syrian resolution on Aug. 31, designating Dec. 19 as an International Day to Honor Women Searching for the Missing.
The consensus adoption marks the first draft resolution submitted by Syria to the United Nations in its modern history, signaling a milestone for Syrian diplomacy and elevating a national cause to a global humanitarian effort.
Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ibrahim Olabi told SANA that the consensus adoption reflects a historical moment for Syria’s multilateral diplomacy, noting that the resolution encourages member states and UN entities to commemorate the day and involve searching women in decision-making processes.
Olabi explained that Dec. 19 was chosen to precede the adoption anniversary of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, recognizing the sacrifices and leadership of women in raising awareness on missing persons.
Head of the National Commission for Missing Persons, Mohammad Reda Jalkhi, previously advocated for the initiative during a UN Security Council Arria-formula meeting, following joint consultations with families of the missing in Damascus alongside diplomatic officials.
This UN designation coincides with local efforts, where the National Commission for Missing Persons recently launched the “Athar” national program and portal on Aug. 30 to track cases, secure over 170 mass grave sites, and gather evidence across Syria.
