Damascus, August 24 (SANA) The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Monday issued an official update to its sanctions regulations confirming the removal of Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism after the legal review period by Congress ended without objection.
According to the update published on the Treasury Department’s official website, Syria is no longer subject to the State Sponsors of Terrorism regulations, including restrictions related to financial and banking transactions. The change follows a notification issued by U.S. President Donald Trump to Congress on July 8 initiating procedures to end Syria’s designation.
The Treasury update said the change takes effect immediately and forms part of OFAC’s periodic amendments to its regulatory framework in accordance with legal and procedural developments adopted by the U.S. administration.
Earlier Monday, Trump reposted a statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani concerning Syria’s removal from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, following the expiration of the 45-day period prescribed under U.S. law for congressional review of the designation.
