Damascus, July 22 (SANA) – The head of Syria’s National Commission for Missing Persons, Mohammad Reda Jalkhi, said the UN Security Council’s discussion on transitional justice and missing persons in Syria underscored that the issue extends beyond a humanitarian concern and is fundamentally one of rights, human dignity, and sustainable peace.
Speaking to SANA on Wednesday, Jalkhi said every family has the right to know the fate of missing loved ones, stressing that meaningful cooperation must deliver tangible results that preserve the dignity of the missing, ease the suffering of their relatives, and help establish the truth.
He also said that there can be no healing for families without the truth, and no lasting stability while the fate of hundreds of thousands of Syrians remains unknown.
Jalkhi also called on UN member states to support an initiative to establish an international day recognising women from families of the missing, describing it as a tribute to their resilience and an affirmation that supporting them is integral to families’ right to the truth.
He added that, after years of neglect and denial, the issue of missing persons has become a national priority in Syria, led by a specialized institution working under a defined framework aimed at restoring hope to affected families and placing their rights at the centre of national efforts.
The UN Security Council convened on Tuesday to discuss transitional justice and missing persons in Syria, with participation by Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Alabi; the head of the National Commission for Transitional Justice, Abdul Basit Abdul Latif; and Jalkhi.
