Damascus, July 19 (SANA) Syria’s Supreme Constitutional Court held its inaugural meeting on Sunday to begin drafting legislation governing its work and defining its jurisdiction, following the appointment of its members under Presidential Decree No. 149 of 2026.

Chaired by Court President Issam al-Khalaif, the meeting focused on preparing the draft law before its finalization and submission to the relevant authorities.

Al-Khalaif told SANA the proposed legislation is intended to implement the Constitutional Declaration and enable the court to exercise its role within the institutions of the new Syrian state.

Court member Rayan Kahilan said the establishment of the court marks the completion of Syria’s constitutional institutions, describing it as an independent judicial body responsible for reviewing the constitutionality of laws, issuing advisory opinions and carrying out other duties assigned under its mandate.

Another court member, Aref al-Shaal, said the court would review legislation passed by the People’s Assembly for constitutional compliance and interpret constitutional provisions upon requests from the President of the Republic or the Speaker of the People’s Assembly.

The court’s members took the constitutional oath before President Ahmad al-Sharaa on July 11, formally assuming their duties under Presidential Decree No. 149 of 2026 pending the enactment of the law regulating the court’s work.
