Damascus, June 19 (SANA) Syrian Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais met with a delegation from the UN’s International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) to discuss cooperation in criminal investigations and evidence collection, the Justice Ministry said Friday.
During the meeting at the ministry’s headquarters in Damascus, the two sides discussed forming joint workshops aimed at strengthening legal capacities in criminal investigations and evidence collection to support transitional justice and ensure fair trials in line with international standards, according to a ministry statement on Telegram.
Al-Wais previously met with an IIIM delegation in February to discuss cooperation and enhancing legal capacities to ensure transitional justice in line with international standards.
The IIIM was established by the UN General Assembly in December 2016 to assist in investigating and prosecuting those responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed in Syria since March 2011, through the collection, preservation and analysis of evidence and the preparation of legal files that can be used before competent national, regional or international courts.
