Paris, May 28 (SANA) Syrian and French journalists, media professionals and press freedom advocates gathered in Paris to discuss the state of press freedoms and the future of Syria’s media sector during a seminar hosted by the Journalism and Citizenship NGO organization and the Sahafa Med Network.
The event, held at the Arab World Institute, featured Reporters Without Borders Director General Thibaut Bruttin and Arab World Institute President Anne-Claire Legendre.
Participants discussed developments in Syria’s media landscape, challenges facing journalists and prospects for rebuilding the country’s media environment following years of war and political turmoil.
The discussions also addressed the latest World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders, which showed Syria climbing 36 places to 141st from 177th a year earlier.
The report said Syria recorded its largest-ever improvement in the rankings following the fall of the deposed regime in December 2024, ending decades of tight restrictions on media activity.
Reporters Without Borders said Syria made progress across all five indicators used to measure global press freedom: political, economic, legal, social and security.
The organization highlighted improvements in Syria’s legal framework for media freedoms, noting that legal conditions for journalists have deteriorated in many countries across the region.
