Damascus, April 30 (SANA) Syria’s Information Minister Hamza al-Mustafa on Thursday welcomed the country’s sharp rise in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index, describing it as a significant step in efforts to improve the media environment.
Syria climbed 36 places to rank 141st globally, up from 177th in 2025, marking what the minister said was the largest annual improvement recorded since the index was first published 25 years ago.
Al-Mustafa said the progress reflects ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the role of media institutions and enhancing professional standards, adding that Syria now ranks eighth among Arab countries.
He noted that while Syria remains in the “red category” in terms of security conditions, the improvement signals momentum toward further progress, including the goal of entering the top 100.
The minister attributed the development to policies under the leadership of President Ahmad al-Sharaa that focused on regulation and institutional organization, rather than restrictions, saying they have helped create a more effective media environment.
He added that the achievement aligns with the ministry’s strategy to move from a phase of consolidation to one centered on efficiency, organization and communication.
Al-Mustafa also described the advance as recognition of the sacrifices made by journalists of the Syrian revolution, including those who were martyred or injured, and praised the efforts of media professionals both inside and outside the country.
The World Press Freedom Index, published annually by Reporters Without Borders, assesses media conditions worldwide based on political, economic, legislative, social and security indicators.
