Bern, May 4 (SANA) Syria is participating in the first session of the Council of Administration of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), held at the union’s headquarters in Bern, Switzerland, from May 4 to 8.
The current session, chaired by the United Arab Emirates, aims to strengthen the global postal and logistics system by fostering interconnectedness, efficiency, and sustainability. Key agenda items include the development of governance and financial reform, the promotion of digital integration and inclusion, and the establishment of follow-up mechanisms to ensure effective oversight between UPU congresses.
Imad al-Din Hamad, Director General of the Syrian Postal Establishment, told SANA on Monday that this session marks the beginning of a new operational cycle (2026-2029).
He explained that the primary focus is establishing a roadmap to implement the strategic outcomes adopted at the 2025 Dubai Congress, which seek to modernize the postal sector and bolster its role in supporting the digital economy and global services.

Hamad emphasized the importance of Syria’s participation in the council, noting that it provides a platform to exchange expertise and keep pace with global developments in the postal sector. He added that integrating these international standards will directly contribute to improving the quality of services provided to Syrian citizens.
The Council of Administration, which consists of 41 member states, is one of the UPU’s primary bodies. It meets annually in Bern to ensure the continuity of the union’s work between congresses, supervising its activities and studying complex regulatory, administrative, and legal issues affecting the international postal network.
