Damascus, March 15 (SANA) Several electricity substations in the Damascus countryside were temporarily knocked out of service after a powerful overnight storm hit the area late Saturday, causing widespread power outages, authorities said.
The Damascus Countryside Electricity Company said in a statement that substations in Arbin, Saqba, Zabadani and Bloudan stopped operating due to emergency failures triggered by the severe weather.
Technical teams are working to repair damaged feeders and restore electricity “as quickly as possible,” the company added.
The storm brought heavy rain to the capital, accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, leading to flooding on several roads and in tunnels.
The Damascus governorate also reported the collapse of two previously cracked walls in the Old City.
Authorities said service teams had been deployed across the city overnight to pump out water and reopen blocked roads.
Meanwhile, the Emergency and Disaster Management Directorate said civil defense teams responded to more than 20 locations, dealt with two wall collapses and took measures to ensure public safety.
Earlier, the General Directorate of Meteorology warned of a deep low-pressure system, with surface pressure dropping to 995 hectopascals, forecasting heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, with possible snowfall over the Qalamoun and Hermon highlands.
The storm’s impact is expected to continue until Sunday evening.
