Damascus, Feb. 25 (SANA) Syria’s Interior Ministry said Wednesday that most individuals who left the al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria without authorization have been returned and had their legal status regularized.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba told a press conference that authorities are continuing to track those who departed the camp “in an irregular manner,” adding that many of the camp’s residents have been relocated to an alternative site with improved humanitarian conditions and easier access.
Al-Baba said the ministry had implemented a security deployment plan in Hasakah province alongside the entry of Syrian Arab Army, in line with an agreement between the government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The spokesperson said authorities had moved to secure the camp’s perimeter and review the records and identification documents of residents in coordination with relevant agencies and civil society organizations.
He described conditions inside al-Hol as “shocking,” calling it “a detention camp” where thousands of people had been held for years in harsh conditions in a semi-desert area lacking adequate infrastructure and contradicting international norms of justice and human rights.
The camp has long drawn criticism from rights groups over humanitarian conditions and security concerns.
He added that the government’s approach is based on respect for human dignity and the fair application of the law, while pursuing those proven to be involved in crimes through transparent judicial procedures.
He added that the government is working to verify the identities of those who lost official documents. Efforts are underway to establish a unified national civil registry database.
