Damascus, Feb.09 (SANA) Tourism Minister Mazen al-Salhani said the Damascus International Book Fair represents an opportunity to revive reading culture and highlight its importance in building society and developing awareness.
Speaking during a tour of the fair’s pavilions on Sunday, al-Salhani said the ministry’s participation comes as the event hosts exhibitors from 35 countries, reflecting the fair’s growing cultural standing and its role in stimulating cultural and tourism activity in Syria.
“The presence of a number of influencers who highlighted Syria’s tourist and archaeological sites contributed to showcasing the richness of the national heritage and enhancing interest in it,” al-Salhani said during the visit.
He added that the Ministry of Tourism is keen to maintain a constant presence at exhibitions and cultural events, citing their role in communicating with the public and introducing Syria’s tourism assets.
Addressing the fair’s social impact, al-Salhani noted that many young people in recent years have moved away from reading toward social media, making the book fair an opportunity to revive reading habits and keep books a cornerstone of cultural development. He expressed hope that the fair’s activities will expand in future editions and continue to support national culture.
The Damascus International Book Fair, which opened officially last Thursday under the patronage and in the presence of President Ahmad al-Sharaa, serves as an annual platform bringing together local, Arab and international publishing houses, reflecting Damascus’s historical status as a capital of culture and thought.
