Homs, Feb. 8 (SANA) Five people were killed and ten others injured in a house fire that broke out overnight in Ghouta neighborhood in Homs, according to the Syrian Civil Defense.
Homs Civil Defense operations commander Obaida al-Othman told SANA that the fire started in a first-floor apartment due to a diesel-powered heater. The homeowner fled to an upper floor, but thick smoke spread throughout the building, causing multiple cases of suffocation among residents.
Al-Othman said the victims included three women and two men. Ten injured people were treated at the scene by ambulance crews.
Domestic fires linked to the use of diesel heaters are frequently reported during the winter months. Civil Defense teams have repeatedly urged residents to ensure heaters are properly secured and never left unattended to prevent such incidents.
