Minister: Syria to become regional data-transmission hub

Communications and Technology Minister Abdul Salam Haykal said the ministry is pursuing a long-term strategic plan to turn Syria into a regional hub for data transmission and international communications by developing the country’s digital infrastructure, restoring global connectivity and integrating with international technical systems.

Haykal spoke to reporters at the 11th Syria HIGH TECH information and communications technology exhibition, held at the Damascus Fairgrounds on Nov. 21, 2025. He said the ministry has launched two projects — Silk Link and Barq Net — to modernize internet infrastructure nationwide. According to the minister, Silk Link will create a national, trans-Syria backbone fiber-optic network, while Barq Net will provide the fiber-optic last-mile infrastructure that delivers service to end users.

“The Barq Net project will be linked with Silk Link once the main network is completed, enabling the provision of fast, stable and secure internet service across Syria,” Haykal said. He added that the ministry is also upgrading telecommunications infrastructure by expanding telephone and digital services and installing communications towers in underserved areas across multiple governorates to improve service quality and affordability.

Organizers say about 225 local, Arab and international exhibitors are participating in the 11th Syria HIGH TECH exhibition, which opened at the Damascus Fairgrounds on Nov. 21, 2025. The event brings together companies and ministries working in technology, telecommunications, digital transformation and artificial intelligence.
