Damascus, March 21 (SANA) Syrians marked Mother’s Day on Saturday with a renewed sense of reverence for women who have embodied the nation’s resilience, particularly mothers who have lost their sons in defense of the homeland, transforming personal grief into enduring symbols of sacrifice and steadfastness.
Across the country, the occasion transcended its traditional celebratory tone, becoming a moment of collective reflection on the role of Syrian mothers as guardians of social cohesion and bearers of national memory. For many, the day stands as a testament to women who, despite profound loss, have upheld values of dignity, patience, and unwavering commitment to Syria.
The Scale of the Sacrifice
The Syrian mother has not only been the emotional anchor of the family, but also among those most affected by a war that has sought to fracture the social fabric. Documented data over the past decade underscores the scale of the toll borne by women.
Since March 2011, it is estimated that approximately 30,000 females have been killed—each a mother, a daughter, or a future nurturer of the homeland.
According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, at least 29,064 females have been killed in Syria since March 2011, including 117 who died under torture. The organization also documented 11,268 cases of enforced disappearance among females, in addition to 11,553 incidents of sexual violence.
Behind the Numbers: Enduring Legacy
These figures are not merely statistics; they reflect thousands of households where loss has reshaped daily life, and where mothers have assumed the dual role of caregiver and guardian of memory.
Thousands of women remain missing or forcibly disappeared, their absence a lasting wound within Syrian society. At the same time, countless mothers continue to endure, raising families under difficult conditions and contributing to the resilience and recovery of their communities.
Yet their role extends beyond survival. Many have continued to nurture future generations, support local initiatives, and reinforce the foundations of social cohesion. Their perseverance reflects a steadfast belief in continuity and renewal, underscoring the central role of mothers in sustaining the nation’s spirit.
A Nation Strengthened Through Trial
The years of the revolution have imposed immense hardship on Syrian families. However, the enduring strength of mothers has remained a defining factor in preserving societal stability and continuity.
Mother’s Day in Syria thus emerges not only as a celebration of maternal care, but as a tribute to women whose resilience has helped shape the country’s endurance. Their stories—marked by both sorrow and dignity—continue to inspire a nation that draws from their strength as it looks toward the future.
