Syria and Iraq Join Forces to Seize Large Drug Shipment, Arrest Smugglers

In a joint operation between Syria and Iraq, authorities have intercepted a significant drug shipment and arrested several suspects connected to transnational smuggling networks. The operation resulted in the seizure of 108 kilograms of hashish and more than 1.27 million Captagon pills.

In a statement shared on its Telegram channel, the Syrian Interior Ministry confirmed that the operation was carried out through close intelligence sharing and field coordination between Syria’s Anti-Narcotic Directorate and Iraq’s General Directorate for Drug Control. The operation also led to the arrest of several individuals wanted by international law enforcement agencies for their involvement in cross-border drug trafficking.

“The operation is part of a series of ongoing international efforts carried out by Syria’s Anti-Narcotic Directorate in collaboration with both neighboring and allied countries,” the statement read. It emphasized that these efforts are part of a broader framework of continuous security and intelligence coordination aimed at tackling the global drug trade.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding society from the dangers of drugs, describing it as a national and ethical responsibility. “We will remain resolute in our efforts to protect our youth and national security from the devastating effects of drug trafficking,” the statement added.

“We will continue working closely with our international partners to enhance cooperation and ensure the safety and stability of Syria and the wider region,” it concluded.

This operation underscores the growing collaboration between neighboring countries in combating the global drug trade, a significant issue for the Middle East.
