Darayya Breaks 13-Year Silence, Commemorates Massacre

Damascus, SANA- The city of Darayya commemorated the August 2012 massacre committed by the former regime in an event that brought together the families of the martyrs and survivors after years of silence imposed by fear of the regime’s brutality.

713 Martyrs and a Mass Grave

Director of the Media Office in Darayya, Yasser Jamal al-Din, explained to a SANA reporter that the massacre reached its peak on August 25, 2012, resulting in the deaths of 713 people, including 508 documented by name and 205 unidentified.

He added that the siege at the time forced residents to bury the martyrs in a mass grave, which the regime deliberately destroyed in 2016.

The event participants listened to testimonies of some Survivor describing the brutality of the former regime against the city residents.

The 2012 massacre was followed by a stifling siege that lasted four years, during which food and medicine were prohibited from entering the city.

The city was subjected to daily bombardment with barrel bombs and warplanes, destroying its infrastructure and displacing tens of thousands by 2016.
