UNHCR: 15,000 Syrian refugees return homeland in May

Amman, SANA-The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced that more than 15,000 registered Syrian refugees returned to their homeland during the month of May—a 45% increase compared to the previous month.

According to a report published on the website of Jordanian channel “Al-Mamlaka,” 10,500 Syrian refugees returned to Syria in April. This brings the total number of returnees from Jordan to Syria since December 8 up until the end of May to approximately 75,500 individuals.

In its report, the UNHCR noted that it continues to support refugees who express a desire to return. In May, it organized the transport of thousands of refugees from host communities and camps back to Syria—showing a noticeable increase from April.

The agency also conducted one-on-one interviews with those intending to return, to ensure their decisions were voluntary and well-informed. Additionally, it provided them with information about available services in Syria, in coordination with its Damascus office.
