EU welcomes the formation of National Authorities for Transitional Justice and Missing

Brussels, SANA- The European Union welcomed on Monday the formation of the National Authority for Transitional Justice and the National Authority for Missing Persons in Syria as “an important step towards the comprehensive justice and truth which the Syrian people deserve”.

Syrian president Ahmad Al- Sharaa issued lately two decrees to establish the National Authority for Transitional Justice and the National Authority for Missing Persons in Syria to deal with crimes committed by former regime and to find out the truth about the missing persons.

In a statement published on its website, the EU said: ” Efforts on transitional justice are fundamental to lay the groundwork for reconciliation and lasting peace in Syria. Investigating the fate of all missing persons will be a crucial step in bringing closure to families and communities affected”.

The EU called on the Syrian authorities to “ensure that these efforts are carried out in a transparent, impartial, and inclusive manner, in line with international standards of justice”.

“It is essential that relevant international bodies, as well as Syrian and international civil society organizations, be fully associated to these efforts” the statement added.

The statement also stressed that the “EU continues to support the Syrian people in their journey toward peace, stability, and justice”.
