Damascus, SANA- In the world of sports, where challenges abound, some individuals emerge as symbols of determination and strength—proving that true willpower knows no limits. Such is the case of 18-year-old boxer Lujain Assi, who not only battled cancer but also excelled in the boxing ring simultaneously.

Assi, a promising athlete, drew the attention of boxing experts with her remarkable performance and earned well-deserved accolades in the championships she entered, despite her fight against cancer—a fight she won decisively, with what she calls a “knockout victory.”

In a statement to SANA, Assi, who trains with Al-Nidal Sports Club, shared: “I fell in love with the noble art—as boxing enthusiasts like to call it—at the age of 13. I trained under international coach Mohammad Shehada, who taught me the fundamentals and techniques of the sport until I was able to compete in real tournaments.”

She added “My first participation was at the 2022 Syrian Championship, where I won first place in the 46 kg category. That’s when my dream began: to win shining medals for Syria on major podiums.”

Despite the diagnosis, she chose not to surrender. Instead, she launched a new chapter in her life with one clear goal: to defeat cancer just as she had triumphed in the ring.

“Challenges only exist when we lose sight of our goals,” she said. “Although I was initially afraid, I chose to face the pain with determination. I entered treatment with strong encouragement from my family and coach.”

Assi underwent 12 chemotherapy sessions, a surgical operation, and 36 radiation sessions. Despite all this, she never stopped training. “I would receive a chemo dose and head to practice the very same day. Cancer was never an illness to me—it was not an obstacle to pursuing my dream,” she added. “Even when I needed psychological support during treatment, I was the one supporting my teammates and constantly encouraging them to train with determination and patience.”

Now fully recovered, Assi expressed her happiness at overcoming cancer. Her new goal is clear: one championship after another, proudly raising Syria’s flag—a country she believes is worthy of great achievements.

Coach Mohammad Shehada praised his athlete’s technical skills and resilience, noting that she overcame her illness with patience and resolve. “She returned to her sports life stronger and more determined to reach her goals. Her exceptional willpower and high skill level are the foundation of any athlete’s success,” he said.
