Zurich, Sept. 6 (SANA) FIFA President Gianni Infantino remains committed to seeking re-election in March 2027 despite growing opposition following the collapse of a plan to sell a stake in FIFA competitions to private investors, the organisation said Sunday.
“The FIFA president announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election,” a FIFA spokesperson said.
The 56-year-old is seeking a fourth term after FIFA abandoned a proposal in July to sell private investors a 20% stake in commercial rights linked to the World Cup and other competitions.
The plan prompted widespread criticism and calls for Infantino to resign from UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF. He continues to receive support from the African and South American confederations.
Asked Saturday whether he regretted the turmoil of the previous six weeks, Infantino declined to comment in detail while attending the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland.
“There will be a lot to say, but there will be a right place and a right time to say this,” he said.
No candidate has formally announced a challenge to Infantino in the 2027 election.
