Madrid, Sept. 4 (SANA) Atletico Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 31, bringing an end to his Spain career following the team’s 2026 World Cup triumph.
Llorente announced the decision on his official account Thursday, saying it came after careful consideration and was not influenced by the amount of playing time he received at the World Cup.
“I have decided to bring my time with the national team to an end,” Llorente said. “I am aware that I am still young and that perhaps, if I continued doing things the right way, I could have had more years ahead of me wearing this shirt.”
He also expressed gratitude to those he had worked with during his international career, saying they had given him and his family “unique and unforgettable moments.”
Llorente made his Spain debut in 2020 and went on to earn 27 international caps over six years without scoring a goal.
He made three appearances during the 2026 World Cup, including Spain’s semifinal against France.
