Ottawa, April 29 (SANA) FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the governing body will support the development of football in Syria and plans to visit Damascus, during talks with a Syrian Football Association delegation on the sidelines of the FIFA Congress in Canada.
The Syrian delegation, headed by association president Firas Tit, invited Infantino to visit Syria and presented an overview of damage to sports facilities in recent years, highlighting the need for support to rehabilitate stadiums and develop infrastructure.
Infantino said FIFA is committed to backing Syrian football, citing plans to improve stadiums, strengthen domestic competitions and expand youth development programs.
He also announced a project aimed at upgrading football infrastructure in Syria and said efforts are under way to lift restrictions on hosting matches in Syrian stadiums.
A foundation stone ceremony for the project is expected to take place during Infantino’s planned visit, which is scheduled after the 2026 World Cup.
The meeting included officials from FIFA and the Syrian delegation and focused on steps to support the sustainable development of football in Syria.
