The decisive moment came early when Eberechi Eze scored in the ninth minute, giving Arsenal a lead they maintained throughout the match.
Under Spanish coach Mikel Arteta, Arsenal now sit top of the table with 73 points, three ahead of Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
Newcastle United, meanwhile, suffered a fourth consecutive defeat and remain 14th with 42 points.
