Sanya, April 23 (SANA) -Syria’s men’s beach volleyball team began its participation in the Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China, with a 2–1 victory over Bhutan on the first day of competition.
The tournament features 45 Asian countries, with 1,790 athletes competing across 63 events in 14 beach sports.
Syria is competing in three disciplines: beach volleyball, aquathlon and jiu-jitsu. The men’s beach volleyball team, made up of Kteba Pirini and Orwa al-Saqqa, is scheduled to face China in its second match on Thursday.
In the women’s competition, Syria lost its opening beach volleyball match to Malaysia 2–0 and will play Japan in its next match on Friday.
In aquathlon, Ihab Khlouf finished 13th, while Cesar Shomari placed 16th.
In jiu-jitsu, Ibrahim Stas lost to South Korea’s Yang Byeong-joon in the 62 kg category, while Nadia Assaf was defeated by the Philippines’ Lao Andrea Luis in the 63 kg category.
