Tehran, March 21 (SANA) Iranian media reported that striker Sardar Azmoun has been excluded from the national team over conduct described as disloyal, raising uncertainty over his role in the upcoming World Cup.
Azmoun, one of Iran’s leading forwards, has scored 57 goals in 91 international appearances since his debut in 2014.
Reports said the decision followed a social media post showing Azmoun meeting Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, which drew criticism from Iranian media, according to Reuters.
The striker later removed the post, but commentators on state television criticized his actions, describing them as inappropriate.
There was no immediate confirmation from the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Azmoun, 31, plays club football for Shabab Al-Ahli in the United Arab Emirates and has previously featured for Iran in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
His reported absence could affect Iran’s preparations for the tournament, with the team scheduled to play upcoming friendlies as part of its build-up.
