Washington, June 1 (SANA) U.S. Representative Joe Wilson said U.S.-Syria relations are improving and called for the removal of Syria’s designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism, welcoming a series of steps taken by President Donald Trump‘s administration toward Damascus.
In a post on social media platform X, the South Carolina Republican praised Trump’s Syria policy, including the appointment of Ambassador Tom Barrack as special presidential envoy for Syria and Iraq and the U.S. president’s phone conversation with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Sunday.
Wilson said removing Syria‘s longstanding terrorism designation would help promote stability and economic development in the country.
The comments came after Presidents al-Sharaa and Trump discussed bilateral ties as well as regional and international developments during a telephone call. Trump emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and supporting Syria’s recovery and reconstruction efforts.
Trump recently named Barrack, currently the U.S. ambassador to Türkiye, as special envoy for Syria and Iraq, expanding his role in Washington’s engagement with the region.
The latest developments reflect a broader shift in U.S. policy toward Syria following recent diplomatic contacts between Washington and Damascus. However, Syria’s decades-old designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism remains in place.
