New York, March 27 (SANA) The UN Security Council is holding a closed-door session on Iran Friday at Russia’s request, Russian official media reported, as the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran enters its second month.
TASS quoted Evgeny Uspenskiy, spokesperson for Russia’s UN mission, saying the consultations were requested “due to ongoing attacks on Iran’s civilian infrastructure, including educational and healthcare facilities.”
The session, scheduled by the United States, which holds the Council presidency this month, is set to begin at 10 a.m. New York time (14:00 GMT).
U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he extended the deadline for potential strikes on Iranian energy facilities to April 6, citing a request from Tehran, while warning that energy sites could be destroyed if no agreement is reached.
The conflict began with a U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran on February 28. Iran has responded with missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and other countries in the region, hitting civilian and energy infrastructure in the Gulf, causing casualties and material damage, and temporarily closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
UN Human Rights Council Session
Separately, the UN Human Rights Council is scheduled to meet in Geneva Friday to review an attack on a school in Minab, southern Iran, on the first day of the conflict. Iran has blamed Israel and the United States, claiming over 150 deaths, mostly children. Israel denied involvement, and Washington said it is investigating.
Preliminary findings from a U.S. military inquiry indicate that a Tomahawk missile struck the school due to a targeting error, The New York Times reported.
