Macron says France’s role in war is purely defensive
President of France, Emmanuel Macron

Paris, March 13 (SANA) – President of France Emmanuel Macron said Friday that France’s role in the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war against Iran is “purely defensive,” stressing that nothing justifies attacks against French forces.

Speaking at a press conference in Paris alongside Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Macron said France would continue acting with restraint while protecting its citizens and defending its interests and security.

His remarks came after a drone attack on a joint base in Erbil, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, killed one French soldier and wounded six others.

Macron described the attack as “unacceptable” and said he had requested a comprehensive military assessment of the incident. He also said he would discuss the situation with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

France earlier confirmed that the drone strike targeted a joint base in Erbil amid the regional escalation that began on February 28.
