New York, March 11 (SANA) Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, expressed the Syrian Arab Republic’s deep concern over the dangerous military escalation in the region during a UN Security Council session on Lebanon on Wednesday.
Ambassador Olabi emphasized that the ongoing conflict has had severe political, security, and economic repercussions, most notably on the Lebanese people and their national infrastructure. He reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to the safety and security of Lebanon, strongly condemning the bombardment that obstructs the Lebanese state from fulfilling its official responsibilities, specifically pointing to the state’s efforts to disarm the Hezbollah militia as a vital mission being undermined by the current escalation.
The ambassador warned that the continuation of this conflict risks expanding the scope of the war in a manner that contradicts the interests of Lebanon and the wider region, particularly as it coincides with Israel’s repeated violations of Syrian sovereignty and the occupation of new territories since December 8, 2024, in a flagrant breach of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
The Syrian representative also used the platform to address broader regional threats, condemning in the strongest terms the ongoing Iranian attacks targeting the security of the Arab Gulf states, Jordan, and Iraq.
Olabi expressed Syria’s full solidarity with these nations against “brutal aggression” and called for absolute respect for their territorial integrity. Regarding the humanitarian situation, Olabi rejected policies of displacing civilians through systematic destruction, noting that the resulting waves of migration create immense challenges for both Lebanon and Syria that may become “difficult to contain.”
Olabi welcomed the Lebanese government’s decision to reject any military or security activities originating from its territory outside the framework of legitimate state institutions.
The ambassador concluded by noting that since the fall of the ousted regime, Syria and Lebanon have established a new era of bilateral relations based on mutual respect and shared interests, solidified through numerous official visits aimed at resolving long-standing political and technical issues between the two neighbors.
