Riyad, Feb.10 (SANA) U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack said Syria’s participation in the meeting of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS in Riyadh represents a new chapter in collective security, describing the move as part of a broader approach based on regional solutions and shared responsibility.
Barrack made the remarks in a post on X on Tuesday, commenting on Syria’s participation in the meeting of political directors of the international coalition. “Regional solutions and shared responsibility — Syria’s participation in the coalition meeting in Riyadh marks a new chapter in collective security,” he wrote.
In a joint statement issued Monday by the United States and Saudi Arabia, the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS welcomed Syria as its newest member and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts to defeat the group in Syria and Iraq.
The statement followed a meeting in Saudi Arabia of senior diplomatic and defense officials from the coalition, who welcomed Syria as the group’s 90th member.
Participants said they were prepared to work with the Syrian government as part of the ongoing campaign against the group.
Syria’s Foreign Ministry said last month that Damascus remains committed to combating ISIS and preventing the group from establishing safe havens on Syrian territory, calling on the United States and other coalition members to support those efforts.
