Baghdad, Jan. 23 (SANA) Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Thursday stressed that stabilizing Syria and preserving its territorial integrity is crucial for Iraq and the wider region.

Al-Sudani made the remarks during a meeting with U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrak in Baghdad, where they discussed developments in Syria and broader regional issues. He highlighted Baghdad’s partnership with Washington in combating terrorism and supporting regional efforts to promote stability and prosperity.

The U.S. envoy conveyed President Donald Trump’s appreciation for Iraq’s role in promoting regional stability.

On Tuesday, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa spoke by phone with al-Sudani, reviewing regional developments, particularly in northern and eastern Syria, and emphasizing the importance of maintaining Syria’s sovereignty and securing the Syrian–Iraqi border.

On Wednesday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the start of operations to transfer ISIS detainees from northeastern Syria to Iraq.
