Jakarta, June 17 (SANA)  A shallow earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck the central Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Tuesday, with initial reports indicating no casualties or damage.

Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as saying that the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth at 10:27 a.m. local time in an area southeast of Palu, the capital of Central Sulawesi province.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said residents in the cities of Palu and Sigi felt strong tremors, but stressed that there was no risk of a tsunami resulting from the earthquake.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago in Southeast Asia, experiences frequent seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a zone of intense tectonic activity stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Ocean basin.

In 2018, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake and the tsunami that followed struck Palu, killing more than 4000 people.
