Tokyo, April 20 (SANA) A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Monday off the northeastern coast of Japan, prompting tsunami warnings for parts of the Pacific coastline.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA), cited by Kyodo News, said the earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of about 10 kilometers. It added that tsunami waves of up to 3 meters could reach coastal areas in several regions.
Authorities announced the suspension of some train services between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori stations following the quake, as a precautionary measure.
No immediate official reports were issued regarding casualties or material damage resulting from the earthquake.
Japan lies at the junction of four major tectonic plates along the western edge of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” making it one of the world’s most seismically active countries, with around 1,500 earthquakes recorded annually.
