Tokyo, Feb. 6 (SANA) Japan announced on Friday that it will restart the world’s largest nuclear power plant, following a suspension on January 21 due to a malfunction in an alarm system.
Kyodo News quoted Takiyuki Inagaki, director of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), as saying the reactor will be restarted on February 9 and is scheduled to begin commercial operations on March 18, after a comprehensive inspection.
TEPCO initially restarted the reactor on January 21, for the first time since its shutdown following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, but a fault in the alarm system led to another suspension.
Kashiwazaki-Kariwa is the world’s largest nuclear power plant in terms of installed capacity, although only one of its seven reactors will be restarted. The plant has been out of service since the tsunami and earthquake that triggered the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011.
