President al-Sharaa appoints Ibrahim Olabi as Syria's Ambassador to the UN

Damascus-SANA- President Ahmad al-Sharaa issued on Tuesday Decree No. (142) for 2025 appointing Ibrahim Abdulmalik Olabi as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations in New York.

Olabi has been acting as a legal advisor to the Syrian Foreign Minister since the fall of the deposed regime in the government for the transactional period.

His main careers included efforts towards lifting of sanctions, dismantling the Assad Era chemical weapons, and working with international organizations responsible for justice and accountability. He has participated in many high-level diplomatic meetings over the last period.

Prior to the fall of the Assad regime, Olabi, as a qualified lawyer in the UK at Guernica 37 Chambers, has been working on international legal efforts on accountability for the Assad era. He founded human rights and advocacy NGOs and sat on the boards of several others.

He consulted for the UN and other international organizations. This work led him to engage with heads of states, Ministers and diplomats in multilateral forums such as New York, Geneva and the Hague.

Olabi completed his legal education in the UK at Manchester University, having been awarded both the Undergraduate of the Year and Postgraduate of the Year student awards. He then completed his Master in Public Policy at the School of Government, University of Oxford.
