Ankara, Sept. 22 (SANA) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called for fundamental reforms to global decision-making mechanisms, including the abolition of veto power in the UN Security Council.
According to Anadolu Agency, Erdoğan wrote in an article for Bloomberg titled “The UN Must Abolish the Veto Power in the Security Council” that achieving a fairer world requires bringing together the capacities and perspectives of different regions through dialogue and cooperation.
He said lasting peace cannot be achieved through separate blocs that do not engage with one another, and called for transforming demands for Security Council reform into a concrete roadmap centered on removing veto privileges.
Erdoğan argued that adding new permanent members with similar privileges would not resolve what he described as the concentration of decision-making authority among a limited number of countries, saying meaningful reform should begin with addressing veto power.
Erdoğan called for forming a broad coalition within the UN General Assembly based on the principle that no country should have permanent authority to prevent decisions supported by the wider international community.
He also called for strengthening the role of the General Assembly, increasing the Security Council’s representativeness and enhancing accountability between the two bodies.
The Turkish president said new centers of influence have emerged in areas including economics, security, technology and diplomacy, while international institutions have not adapted at the same pace.
He pointed to Asia’s growing economic role, calls from African countries for stronger representation and the increasing role of developing nations in expressing their priorities.
Erdoğan said the growing influence of regional actors requires them to assume greater responsibilities in their regions, adding that regional issues cannot be resolved solely through approaches determined from outside.
He said Türkiye would continue using its international relations and experience in multilateral diplomacy to support reform efforts, including strengthening the role of elected members in decision-making and increasing the role of the UN General Assembly.
