Beijing, Sept. 18 (SANA) China and Indonesia discussed strengthening military ties, expanding security cooperation and increasing strategic communication between their armed forces during talks in Beijing, Xinhua reported Friday.

Zhang Shengmin, vice chairman of China’s Central Military Commission, called for stronger military ties and expanded security cooperation during a meeting with Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin in Beijing.

Zhang said security cooperation reflected mutual strategic trust between the two countries and called on their militaries to implement understandings reached by their presidents and expand exchanges at various levels.

He said closer military cooperation could contribute to regional and international peace and stability.

Sjafrie said Indonesia was ready to work with China to maintain the positive momentum in bilateral and military relations and achieve further results through practical cooperation and exchanges.

The Indonesian defense minister is in Beijing for the 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum, held under the theme “Building Consensus for Stability, Promoting Security Governance Together.”

About 2,000 officials, academics and observers from more than 100 countries, regions and international organizations are taking part in the forum, according to Xinhua.

The talks follow an Aug. 21 meeting in Jakarta at which Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun said Beijing was ready to work with Indonesia to accelerate the modernization of their armed forces and deepen defense and military cooperation.

Dong made the remarks during the second ministerial meeting of the China-Indonesia Joint Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue.
