New York, Sept. 17 (SANA) Saudi Arabia stressed at a UN Security Council meeting in New York that adherence to international law and the UN Charter is essential to maintaining international peace and security and protecting civilians in armed conflicts.
Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Abdulaziz Alwasil said in remarks to the council on Wednesday that civilians, civilian infrastructure and humanitarian and medical workers must be protected, while the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of states must be respected, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
Alwasil called for international law to be applied consistently and without double standards and for greater accountability for violations. He urged greater reliance on dialogue and peaceful means and support for mediation efforts aimed at resolving conflicts and limiting their humanitarian and security consequences.
The remarks come amid renewed Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities said a drone launched toward Makkah on Tuesday was intercepted and destroyed before entering the restricted airspace over the city. Recent attacks have also targeted Saudi territory and civilian and economic infrastructure.
Saudi Arabia has reiterated its right to defend its territory, citizens and residents in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.
