Washington, Aug. 29 (SANA) – US authorities said about 90 American citizens remain missing after catastrophic flash floods swept through border areas between China and Nepal, killing hundreds of people.
Associated Press cited the US State Department as saying in a statement Saturday that it had received no reports of American fatalities in the disaster, adding that three US citizens had been rescued so far.
US officials had earlier said that around 90 Americans remained unaccounted for. A nonprofit organization said 22 US citizens affiliated with it were among those missing, while relatives and friends of others who had lost contact with their families continued posting appeals on social media seeking information about them.
France had earlier announced that four of its citizens were missing following last week’s floods, which caused widespread destruction and heavy loss of life, as search-and-rescue operations continued and teams sought to reach those still unaccounted for.
The death toll from the devastating floods that struck parts of Nepal and western China’s Tibet region has risen to more than 600, while over 2,000 people remain missing.
