Oslo, Aug. 28 (SANA) Norway’s King Harald V, a popular monarch who led the country for 35 years and helped modernize its monarchy, died Friday at the age of 89, the Norwegian Royal Palace said.
“King Harald passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday 28 August, 0635,” the palace said.
Harald had been hospitalized on August 17 and was receiving treatment for a bacterial infection in his bloodstream. His health had declined in recent years, and he reduced his official engagements in 2024 after being fitted with a permanent pacemaker.
His son Haakon, 53, succeeded him as Norway’s king.
Harald ascended to the throne on January 17, 1991, following the death of his father, King Olav V. Over more than three decades, he became known as a reform-minded and unifying figure who sought to make the monarchy more open and accessible.
He played a prominent role during periods of national mourning, most notably after the 2011 attacks in Oslo and on Utøya island that killed 77 people, addressing the nation and offering support to victims and their families.
Harald also advocated tolerance and diversity, supported environmental causes and was an accomplished sailor who represented Norway at three Olympic Games.
Tributes poured in from European leaders and royal families following his death.
Britain’s King Charles III said Harald had served Norway with “unwavering dedication,” guiding the country through major change with warmth and humility, and extended condolences to Queen Sonja and the royal family.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said the country was in mourning and expressed gratitude for Harald’s long service, saying he had demonstrated unwavering faith in the Norwegian people.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described Harald as a “true European” who brought Norwegians together, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Norway had lost a figure who stood for prudence and unity.
Harald is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Queen Sonja, their daughter Princess Märtha Louise, their son King Haakon and six grandchildren.
