Caracas, July 19 (SANA) The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month has risen to 5,119, while the number of injured remains at 16,740, according to updated official figures released on Saturday.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez published the latest figures on Telegram, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

Recovery teams continue searching through the rubble of collapsed buildings in the coastal city of La Guaira, the area hardest hit by the disaster, where thousands of residents remain displaced. Many have sought refuge in temporary shelters that lack adequate water supplies and sanitation, according to local authorities.

The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck less than a minute apart on June 24, causing widespread destruction in La Guaira, north of the capital, Caracas.

Emergency crews have been working for weeks to recover victims and assist survivors as authorities continue relief and recovery operations.
