Caracas, July 16 (SANA) Venezuela’s death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck the country late last month has risen to 4,829, while rescue teams continue searching for survivors and victims beneath the rubble more than three weeks after the disaster.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said in a post on Telegram that about 16,740 people have been injured since the earthquakes struck on June 24.
Search operations remain underway in the coastal city of La Guaira, where emergency workers and relatives of the missing continue efforts to locate people believed trapped under collapsed buildings.
The government said at least 20,857 displaced people are living in overcrowded temporary shelters, many of which lack adequate water supplies and sanitation facilities.
The twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, struck less than a minute apart, causing widespread destruction in La Guaira state, north of the capital, Caracas.
