Washington, July 17 (SANA) The Republican-controlled U.S. House Budget Committee approved a $95 billion funding package on Friday following President Donald Trump’s request for additional financing related to the war with Iran.
According to ABC News, House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington, a Republican from Texas, said about $60 billion of the package would fund the conflict with Iran. He said the money was needed to replenish military supplies, including munitions and other readiness requirements, despite criticism from Democrats.
The proposal also includes funding to implement Trump’s “Save America Act,” which would require voters to present identification and proof of citizenship when registering and voting ahead of November’s midterm elections.
In addition, the package allocates aid to U.S. farmers facing higher fuel and fertilizer costs linked to the economic impact of the conflict in the Middle East.
Democrats criticized the proposal for failing to address rising gasoline and food prices, arguing that those issues remain voters’ top concerns.
The committee’s approval clears the way for a vote by the full House in the coming days, although it remains unclear whether Republicans’ narrow majority will be enough to secure passage.
The package expands on the Trump administration’s emergency funding request submitted to Congress two weeks ago, which sought nearly $88 billion, primarily for military operations related to the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. That request included $67.15 billion for the U.S. military, in addition to nearly $1 trillion appropriated last year and a further $1.5 trillion requested for the next fiscal year.
